JCSU students from the 2012 National Student-Athlete Day celebration
CHARLOTTE, NC – Johnson C. Smith University Athletics will acknowledge their student-athletes that have excelled academically for 2013 National Student-Athlete Day (April 6th) during the annual Athletic Awards Banquet scheduled for Monday, May 6th. The student-athletes will receive their certificates at the banquet to be held in Grimes Lounge beginning at 6:00 p.m.
JCSU is celebrating the outstanding achievements made by their student-athletes who have excelled in academics with a grade point average of 3.0 or better from 15 varsity athletic programs.
National Student-Athlete Day honors student-athletes and the network of parents, coaches, teachers and school systems that make it possible for young people to strike a balance between academic and athletic achievement and who use sport as a vehicle for positive social change. The day, established by the National Consortium for Academics & Sports, is co-sponsored by the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and Northeastern University's Sport in Society. National Student-Athlete Day has grown to enormous proportions with 2.6 million student-athletes being honored nationwide since 1997.
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton has saluted those institutions involved in National Student-Athlete Day activities. In an open letter acknowledging the day, he wrote, “A healthy balance between sports and academics is essential to ensuring that our students are prepared for the challenges of the future.”
