Historically tough season for JCSU

Ettrick, VA – The Johnson C. Smith University men's tennis team dropped their opening round match to Winston-Salem State University 5-0 on Thursday afternoon in the 2012 CIAA Tournament at the Virginia State (VSU) Tennis Courts. JCSU ends the season with a 3-22 overall record and 3-11 mark in the CIAA.

Freshman Darrell Sawyer (Cincinnati, OH) and sophomore Dion Chever (Newport News, VA) fell in the No. 1 doubles match 8-2. The freshman pair of Tuan Nguyen (Greensboro, NC) and Tobias Whitley (Largo, MD) lost 8-1 in the second doubles flight. The Rams made it a complete sweep of the doubles matches with an 8-0 victory in the third spot.

Whitley and freshman Daniel Herrera (Greenville, SC) were defeated in the No. 3 and No. 6 singles flights, respectively, which concluded the team contest.

This is the first losing season out of 17 years as head coach for James Cuthbertson, Jr. The Golden Bulls battled roster issues throughout the season.

The 2012 CIAA Tennis Championship will continue with semifinal matchups on Friday, April 20th and the championship match on Saturday, April 21st.
