Petersburg, VA – The Johnson C. Smith University men's outdoor track and field team showcased their grit to place 3rd in the 2012 CIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships held April 20-21 at the Virginia State Track. Strong performances on the track and in the field secured another CIAA plaque for the team. In the end the final results were as follows:

Sophomore Randale Watson (Kingston, Jamaica) secured a share of the Most Valuable Field Athlete at the championships with victory in the shot put (15.94m, outdoor PB) , second place in the discus (43.42m), and seventh in the javelin event (48.57, PB). The loss in the discus was Watson's first in CIAA competition; he remains undefeated in the shot put event in CIAA Championship competition. Junior Akino Ming (St. Thomas, Jamaica) continued his excellent form by being crowned CIAA Champion in the 200m (21.48) and 400m (45.82) events.

On the track, freshman Rajiv Service (11.22) and sophomore Samual Epps (12.42) placed 14th and  21st, respectively in the 100m event.  Junior Winston Brown (22.06) had limited duties due to a stomach ailment and placed 22nd overall in the event.  Ming missed his PB by 1/100th second in winning the 400m in 45.82 ahead of sophomore Rolando Berch (46.82, PB), who was 4th. Service (51.46) placed 18th overall in the event.

In the 800m, junior Jamille Callum 158.79 and freshman Geovanie Foote 2:12.67 placed 9th and 17th respectively.  Foote (4:17.93), senior Kent King (4:29.66, SB) and freshman Nyquan George (4:33.01) were 14th, 17th, and 21st overall in the 1500m.   George (17:06.27), paced to a personal best in the 5000m event, placing 9th.  

Senior Rolston Gabriel (Charlotte, NC) ran a season best 14.46 in the 110m hurdles preliminary and later placed 6th in the event final.  The heat time is a provisional qualifier and places Gabriel 21st in the NCAA event ranking.  Gabriel faced the starter in the 400m hurdles, but was unable to finish due to a nagging injury.  

In the relays, the JCSU teams (Callum-Ming-Brown-Service, 41.36, SB) placed 3rd in the 4x100m and (Berch-Service-Callum-Brown) placed 2nd in the 4x400m relays.

In the field events, sophomore Horane Holgate (6.45m) placed 9th in the long jump event.  Sophomore Jordan Broome (5.81m) and Epps (5.18m) jumped to 14th and 16th place, respectively.  Holgate (14.57m) and Broome (13.73, PB) leaped to 2nd and 7th places in the triple jump event.  Holgate is the defending CIAA indoor champion in the event.  

Watson successfully defended his championship win in the 2011 shot put, heaving 15.94m for his victory.  Senior Julius Wright (12.66m, SB) placed 12th.  Watson (43.42m) placed second in the discus and Wright (32.30m) placed 17th. Wright (51.56m) competed to 2nd place in his signature event the javelin; where Watson achieved a personal best (48.57m) finishing 7th. 

The conference championships marked the end of the regular season. The postseason for JCSU begins with the Penn Relays April 26-28, 2012 at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field.
