– The Johnson C. Smith University women's outdoor track and field team began their 2014 season at the UNC Charlotte 49ers Track Classic held at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center on the campus of UNCC.

Sophomore Trudy-Ann Richards (St. Thomas, Jamaica) recorded a personal best (PB) in the preliminaries of the 100m dash with a time of 11.82. Freshman Melony Woody (Clinton, MD) opened her outdoor career by clocking 12.74 in the 100m. Richards' time is a NCAA provisional qualifier and ranks No. 4 on the TFRRS performance list. Richards placed second in the event final with a time of 11.90.

Senior Danielle Williams (St. Andrew, Jamaica) won her preliminary heat in the 200m in 24.08 (a provisional qualifying standard) and ranks No. 2 on the TFRRS performance list. Richards recorded 24.94 in the event for ninth place.

In the 400m, both junior Samantha Elliott (Kingston, Jamaica) (54.92, PB) and sophomore Tovea Jenkins (St. James, Jamaica) (55.71) made provisional qualifying standards. Elliott placed third in the event final. Their times are ranked second and sixth, respectively on the TFRRS performance list. Freshman Domenique Julius-Williams (Ontario, Canada) opened her outdoor season with 57.14 in the event prelims.

Redshirt freshman Fellan Fergusson, running unattached, achieved her PB in the 800m winning her heat and placing third overall in 2:10.93. Julius-Williams placed 14th overall in 2:16.51.

Elliott was the fastest qualifier in the 100m hurdles prelims with 13.28. The final was won by JCSU alumna Shermaine Williams in a new meet record 13.14. Her sister, Danielle Williams was second in 13.43, followed by Elliott in third place with a time of 13.46. Elliott leads the TFRRS performance rankings and Williams ranks second.

The 4x100 team of sophomore Shamaz Quince (West Palm Beach, FL), Williams, Richards and Elliott won the event in a Division II leading time of 45.56 – a NCAA provisional mark.

The 4x400m team of freshman Crystal Campbell (St. Catherine, Jamaica), Julius-Williams, senior A'Tyan Kennedy (York, SC) and freshman Shanice Pettigrew (West Palm Beach, FL) placed seventh overall in the event in 3:50.19.

Quince opened her outdoor season in the field events with leaps of 5.34m and 11.11m in the long and triple jumps, respectively.

Junior thrower Imeshia Jones (Reidsville, NC) measured in at 35.16m to place 11th overall in the javelin.

The Golden Bulls will compete at the Raleigh Relays on March 28-29.
