GOLDEN BULLS MEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD PLACES FOURTH AT 2014 CIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Two event champions in the field events

Ettrick, VA – The Johnson C. Smith University men's outdoor track and field team recorded 85 points to finish fourth overall at the 2014 CIAA Championships held Saturday, April 19th on the campus of VSU. Saint Augustine's University won the championship with a team score of 193 points; this is the 17th consecutive title for the Falcons.

(Charleston, SC) placed fourth in both the discus (44.51m) and shot put (13.78m) events. Sophomore Trey Patterson (North Plainfield, NJ) added to the team total with a throw of 13.34m for seventh in the shot put. Senior Joshua Chasse (Fayetteville, NC) contributed with an eighth place finish in the javelin (42.80m).

Senior Horane Holgate (St. Thomas, Jamaica) competed in both the triple jump and long jump events. Holgate had a leap of 14.59m for second place in the triple jump and 6.91m for fifth in the long jump.

On the track, the Golden Bulls claimed second, sixth and eighth in the 400m event. Senior Rolando Berch (St. Andrew, Jamaica) clocked 47.14 for second overall. Freshman Joshua Cunningham (Ontario, Canada) and sophomore Waynee Hyman (Warwick, NY) finished sixth (48.14) and eighth (48.31), respectively in the 400m.

Hyman also competed in the 200m event for sixth place with a time of 21.64. Junior Rajiv Service (Trelawny, Jamaica) placed sixth in the 100m with a time of 11.09. Sophomore Patrick Campbell (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) ran a time of 54.82 for fifth overall in the 400m hurdles.

In addition to competing in the field, Foote placed seventh with a time of 2:02.30 in the 800m event. Senior Nykwan George (Long Island, NY) represented the Golden Bulls in the 1500m (4:20.40) and the 5000m (18:13.96).

In the relays, the JCSU 4x100m team of freshman Gawayne Stephenson (Clarendon, Jamaica), Service, Hyman, and Cunningham were just shy of winning with a second place time of 40.77. The 4x400m team of Hyman, Campbell, Cunningham, and Berch had a controversial disqualification after Berch was charged with impeding a runner down the final stretch.

Here is a breakdown of the CIAA Championship team rankings: Saint Augustine's (1st – 193 points), Virginia State (2nd – 104 points), Virginia Union (3rd – 94 points), JCSU (4th – 85 points), Bowie State (5th – 73 points), Lincoln PA (6th – 62 points), Livingstone (7th – 38 points), and Shaw (8th – 9 points).
 
Team points were assessed based on the following finishes: 1st place (10 points), 2nd place (8 points), 3rd place (6 points), 4th place (5 points), 5th place (4 points), 6th place (3 points), 7th place (2 points), and 8th place (1 point).

The Golden Bulls will travel to Philadelphia, PA for the 2014 Penn Relays held at Franklin Field. Events are scheduled for April 24-26.
