The Tennis Court Dedication Ceremony will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 11 AM on the tennis courts, prior to the divisional match versus Shaw Univ.
Charlotte, NC - The Johnson C. Smith University Athletics Department will hold tennis court dedication ceremony on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 11:00 am in honor of Dr. Winston Coleman and
James Cuthbertson, Jr. The ceremony will be held prior to a men's and women's conference tennis match against Shaw University at the tennis courts on the campus of JCSU.
Dr. Winston R. Coleman started the University's tennis team in 1931 and coached the Golden Bulls to CIAA Championships in 1934, 1935, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944, and 1960.
James Oscar Cuthbertson, Jr. has served as the first and only coach of the JCSU women's tennis program since 1998 and has been coached the men's team for the past 15 years. Cuthbertson has been named CIAA Men's Tennis Coach of the Year four times (1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003), led his men's team to six straight CIAA championships (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004), and coached the men to 84 straight CIAA conference match wins (1998-2004) and nine consecutive western division championships.
The courts have been named after these two essential figures in the JCSU tennis program as the Coleman/Cuthbertson Tennis Courts.
JCSU President Dr. Ronald Carter will be on hand for the ceremony, along with Director of Athletics
Stephen Joyner, Sr. to commemorate the event. Shaw University President Dr. Dorothy Cowser Yancy (former JCSU President) has been invited as a special guest for her efforts in the recognition of both coaches.
Both men's and women's tennis team will play Shaw University at 2:00 pm; the ceremony will be held at 11 AM on the tennis courts. A light reception will take place following the tennis matches.
