Hartsville, SC - The Johnson C. Smith University softball team went 0-2 against Coker College in a non-conference double-header on Wednesday afternoon at the Saleeby-Stokes Softball Field. Both games were called early on account of the eight-run rule, the Lady Cobras won game one 13-5 and game two 16-1. JCSU moves to 1-3 overall, while Coker improves to 3-1.
In game one, J.C. Smith fell behind by 11 runs in the first three innings. Senior outfielder
Mauranda Elliott (Tabor City, NC) broke loose at the top of the fourth with a homerun to left field to put the Lady Golden Bulls on the scoreboard. Junior shortstop
Kawehionapua Chan (Honolulu, HI) belted a two RBI double to left field in the same inning that scored senior catcher
Samantha Smith (Whiteville, NC) and junior pitcher
Allycia Watanabe (Waipahu, HI).
The Lady Cobras had three hits and one run in the bottom of the fourth. Senior second baseman
Rashondae Henderson (Caruthersville, MO) and freshman third baseman Alexandria Buckley (Charlotte, NC) produced runs for JCSU in the fifth. Coker added a run in the sixth to give the Lady Cobras the 13-5 victory due to the NCAA eight-run differential rule.
Sydney Greenwalt (2-1) earned the win, tossing six innings allowing five runs on four hits with nine strikeouts. Chan took the loss, going 5.2 innings, giving up 13 runs on 13 hits.
Elliott was 1-for-3 with a homer with an RBI and a run scored, while Chan had a double with two RBIs and Watanabe was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
JCSU faced another big deficit early in the second ball game. Coker posted 16 runs in the first three innings, including a 14 run third inning on their way to a 16-1 victory. The Lady Golden Bulls scored their lone run of the game in the fifth on a RBI single from junior center fielder
Ashley Williams (Temple Hills, MD).
Becky Dillon earned the win at the mound for the Lady Cobras. Dillon allowed just one run, two hits, and had five strikeouts. Watanabe took the loss, allowing 16 runs on 14 hits in four innings.
Chan and Williams had the two hits for JCSU in the second game.
Johnson C. Smith returns to their home ballpark for a non-conference double header against West Virginia University Institute of Technology on Saturday, February 20th. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm at the Biddleville Park.
