Raleigh, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University softball team have tripled their victory total this season with wins against Elizabeth City State (3-2), Virginia Union (9-3), and Lincoln PA (20-3) over a two-day span at the 2010 CIAA Roundup held at the Walnut Creek Complex. J.C. Smith dropped their only contest to defending CIAA champion Bowie State University (4-1) on Saturday afternoon. JCSU improves to 4-14 overall and 2-1 in the CIAA; the contest versus Lincoln PA does not qualify as a conference game.
Johnson C. Smith squeaked out a 3-2 victory over Elizabeth City State on day one (Friday) of the roundup. The Lady Vikings scored their only two runs in the first inning, mainly off fielding errors. JCSU tied the game with runs in the first and third. Junior shortstop
Kawehi Chan (Honolulu, HI) was hit by a pitch to take base. Chan stole second, advanced to third off an error, and then scored the go-ahead run on the throw.
Junior pitcher
Allycia Watanabe (Waipahu, HI) closed out the game in the seventh. Watanabe struck the first batter, then forced the next two to hit pop ups to the outfield. Watanabe earned her second victory at the mound with 12 strikeouts off 27 at-bats, only giving up four hits and one walk.
JCSU started off day two (Saturday) with an impressive 9-3 victory over Virginia Union. JCSU scored in every inning played except the fifth. Freshman pitcher
Tiarra Hines (Charlotte, NC) won her first game for the Lady Golden Bulls on the diamond. Hines walked eight with seven Ks and four hits off 25 batters.
In the second contest on Saturday, Johnson C. Smith held a 1-0 lead against Bowie State heading into the final inning. Senior centerfielder
Mauranda Elliott (Tabor City, NC) hit a single in the second inning to take base. Elliott stole second and then scored off fielding errors at second for JCSU's only run. Things fell apart for J.C. Smith in the sixth inning.
Bowie State had six hits (including a homerun from Shalai Tabor) and four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead and essentially the game. Sophomore first baseman
Alexis Webb (Durham, NC) singled to right field in the seventh to attempt a rally. Faline Brown got Chan to fly out earlier in the inning,
ShaDella Reese (Atlanta, GA) struck out, and the catcher caught a foul ball from
Rashondae Henderson (Caruthersville, MO) for a Lady Bulldogs' win.
Watanabe is charged with the loss after only two errors, 11 hits, and four runs allowed.
The Lady Golden Bulls extracted some revenge in their final contest on Saturday with a 20-3 drubbing of Lincoln University (PA). JCSU scored 20 runs in four innings before having the game called in the fifth due to the NCAA eight-run rule. Watanabe had three hits off four at-bats and scored four runs.
Freshman shortstop Alexandria Buckley (Charlotte, NC) smacked a 2 RBI homer and scored three runs in the game. Junior outfielder
Ashley Williams (Temple Hills, MD) had four RBIs in the match-up including 3 RBI homerun shot in the second inning.
Lincoln had 10 errors and only six hits. Chan and Hines split pitching duty, but Chan is credited with the victory.
Johnson C. Smith returns to action on Sunday, March 14th against St. Paul's College and Virginia State University. Scheduling has been altered due to inclement weather. Contests are slated to begin at 9:00 am at the Walnut Creek Complex.
