JCSU had their work cut out for them in the outfield, after Slippery Rock had 28 hits in two wins over the Lady Golden Bulls

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University softball team was blanked by Slippery Rock University (17-0; 5-0) Friday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at the Biddleville Park. JCSU falls to 1-11 overall, while the Rock opens their season with two victories.
J.C. Smith fell behind 5-0 in the first inning and could not manage to stop the bleeding. Slippery Rock scored at least two runs in five innings before the game was called due to the NCAA eight-run rule.
Junior pitcher/third baseman
Kawehionapua Chan (Honolulu, HI) picked up her second loss this season at the mound. Chan gave up 16 hits off 33 at-bats with no strikeouts. The Lady Golden Bulls had three hits off 18 at-bats as a team in game one.
Jordan Zeunges and Jessica Kortz each had three RBIs and Lindsey Grace earned the win for Slippery Rock.
Game two had a slightly slower pace than the first contest. Junior pitcher/shortstop
Allycia Watanabe (Waipahu, HI) took the mound and only gave up one run after four innings. At the top of the fifth, JCSU trailed 1-0. Things got out of control in the inning as Slippery Rock produced five hits and four runs.
Kortz doubled to center field (RBI), which scored Zeunges. Then Jenna Geibel smacked a double to the same area of the field to score Kirsten Brant. Kortz and Geibel also crossed home plate in fifth.
The Lady Golden Bulls only had one hit for the remainder of the game before suffering their 11th consecutive defeat.
“We just got to keep our heads and avoid falling behind early,” said first year head coach
Jovon Times. “It's tough losing, but times like these build character and will ultimately prepare us against the conference (CIAA).”
Johnson C. Smith will face Benedict College on Wednesday, March 10th in a non-conference doubleheader at Biddleville Park. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00pm.
