Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team added two victories to the win column after facing Morris College on a sunny Thursday afternoon at Biddleville Park. J.C. Smith won the first game 3-2 and the second game 10-3. JCSU improves to 12-18 overall and 4-0 in their last two non-conference doubleheaders.
The Lady Golden Bulls snatched the first contest with two key offensive plays from freshman pitcher
Tiarra Hines. Morris scored one run in the first and second innings for an early 2-0 lead. Sophomore second baseman
ShaDella Reese (Atlanta, GA) belted a RBI triple to left center to score senior outfielder
Rashondae Henderson (Caruthersville, MO) for the first JCSU run. Hines (Charlotte, NC) followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in Reese from third.
Game one stayed knotted up 2-2 until the bottom of the sixth. Hines was on deck facing two outs with Henderson on second. She doubled to center field to score Henderson and move J.C. Smith ahead 3-2. An infield fly from junior left fielder
Ashley Williams (Temple Hills, MD) closed out the inning.
Junior pitcher
Allycia Watanabe (Waipahu, HI) preserved the win for JCSU with a forced fly and two strikeouts in the seventh. Hines started off on the mound and pitched until the third. Watanabe stepped in faced 15 batters with six Ks and no hits or runs allowed.
Johnson C. Smith dominated Morris in game two with four-run innings in the first and fourth. After runs scored by Reese and junior catcher
Samantha Smith (Whiteville, NC) in the bottom of the fifth; Morris decided to forfeit the game in the sixth. The Lady Hornets trailed 10-3 and called the game before the NCAA eight run rule took effect.
