Petersburg, VA – The Johnson C. Smith University women's tennis team defeated Chowan University 5-0, followed by a 5-0 men's tennis team win against St. Paul's College on day one of the 2010 CIAA Tennis Championships Wednesday afternoon at the Virginia State Tennis Complex. The women's team improves to 15-11 overall and men's team moves up to 15-12 in the overall standings. 
The conference has elected to alter of the format of this year's championships. Instead of individual seeding by flight, teams will face each other in a single elimination, first to five match points tournament. 
Freshman 
Samantha Barnes (Hampton, VA) and senior 
Jae Hargett (Minneapolis, MN) defeated Tara Lunney and Melinda Williams 8-1 in No. 1 doubles. Sophomore 
Rolanda Sue (Charlotte, NC) and freshman 
Margaret Jones (Newport News, VA) wrestled with Kashae Beverly and Audreka Bumbrey, but triumphed 9-7 in No. 2 doubles play. In the third and final doubles competition, junior 
Tyra Breaux (Baltimore, MD) and sophomore 
Camille Allen (Teaneck, NJ) blanked Jena'y Nelson and Brittany Allen 8-0. 
Jones won the No. 4 singles match over Melinda Williams (6-0, 6-1), followed by win at No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-2) by Allen against Brittany Moser. The other singles matches went unfinished and JCSU advanced to the semifinals. 
In men's action, the Golden Bulls quickly moved past St. Paul's College 5-0 due to the Tigers only have four participants. Seniors 
Jason Stuckey (Cincinnati, OH) and 
Aaron Hutcherson (Cincinnati, OH) defeated Damon Simpson and Aaron Morris in No. 1 doubles play. Sophomores 
McKenzie Bean (Hamilton, Bermuda) and 
Robert Butts (Atlanta, GA) topped William Isler and Marlon Buchanan at the second doubles position. Both matches were won 8-0 and the third doubles match was awarded to junior 
Jamil Jones (Atlanta, GA) and sophomore 
Jerald Stuckey (Cincinnati, OH) by default. 
Jones and junior 
Barren Smith (Linwood, NJ) won the No. 5 and No. 6 singles competition by default to pick up the victory for JCSU. 
Semifinal matches will begin on Friday morning (April16th) at the VSU Tennis Complex. Johnson C. Smith women will face Virginia State at 11:00 am, followed by JCSU men against Virginia State at 3:00 pm. Both winners will compete in the championship finals on Saturday, April 17th.
