JCSU finishes the season 18-23 overall and third in the CIAA after tournament play.
Day two of the CIAA Championships started off with a 10:00 am contest against Shaw University. J.C. Smith faced a 7-3 deficit heading into the seventh and final inning. At the bottom of the inning, the JCSU rally began with consistent hitting. With junior utility
Kawehi Chan (Honolulu, HI) and freshman shortstop Alexandria Buckley (Charlotte, NC) already on base, junior pitcher
Allycia Watanabe (Waipahu, HI) smacked a RBI single to left field which allowed both to score.
Sophomore
Alexis Webb (Durham, NC) hit a RBI single to keep bases loaded, score Watanabe, and cut into the lead (7-6). Junior catcher
Samantha Smith (Whiteville, NC) came through with a 2 RBI double to bring in seniors
Rashondae Henderson (Caruthersville, MO) and
Nijah Braddox (Brooklyn, NY) for the win. Johnson C. Smith recorded seven hits and scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to advance to the next round.
In the second contest of the afternoon, JCSU squared off against Fayetteville State University. The Lady Golden Bulls avoided having to come from behind by jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first four innings. FSU put three runs on the scoreboard in the fifth, but J.C. Smith held solid for the second victory of the day. Watanabe earned the win on the mound, facing 28 batters and allowing seven hits.
The final match-up of the evening, Johnson C. Smith took on Bowie State in a day one tournament rematch. The Lady Bulldogs clipped JCSU 5-3 on the first day of competition and 4-1 earlier in the season during the CIAA Roundup.
The Lady Golden Bulls scored first off a RBI double from Chan to bring Smith across home plate. Bowie State responded with a five run bottom of the first. Watanabe started off on the mound, but suffered a knee injury and Chan filled in. JCSU trailed 10-1 heading into the fifth inning. Attempting to avoid the NCAA eight-run rule and spark a comeback, Smith drilled a RBI triple to right field and Webb scored.
That would be the only hit and run scored for Johnson C. Smith and BSU advanced with a 10-2 victory in the fifth.
J.C. Smith nearly tripled their win total from last year this season. Their third place finish is the highest since 2008 when fell in the championship game. The 2010 CIAA Championship game will feature Bowie State against Chowan University for the title. First pitch in the championship contest is scheduled for Saturday, April 17th at 12:00 pm on the Lady Trojans Softball Field.
