GOLDEN BULLS TENNIS TRUMPED BY AUGUSTA STATE IN THE NEW YEAR

First match during the spring semester

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's tennis team was defeated 9-0 by Augusta State University in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon on the Coleman/Cuthbertson Tennis Courts. JCSU moves to 1-5 overall in the first match of the 2011 calendar year.

The No. 1 doubles pair of juniors McKenzie Bean (Hamilton, Bermuda) and Robert Butts (Atlanta, GA) dropped their match 8-1 to Jenner Stevenson and Jan Labas. Freshman Dion Chever (Newport News, VA) and senior Jamil Jones (Atlanta, GA) had the same results (8-1 loss) against Bernando Fernandes and Rafael Milhati at the No. 2 doubles spot. Junior Jerald Stuckey (Cincinnati, OH) and senior Barren Smith (Linwood, NJ) fell in the third doubles match 8-0 for a doubles sweep by Augusta State.

The Golden Bulls were unsuccessful in each of the six singles competitions. Bean showed the most fight in his (6-2, 6-2) loss against Cabellos in No. 2 singles. The ASU Jaguars picked up the victory 9-0.

JCSU will travel to nearby Salisbury, NC for a non-conference rematch against Catawba College on Friday, February 11th. Match play is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
