Indoor season drawing to a close

Clemson, SC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's and women's track and field team participated in their final qualifying meet for the 2011 indoor season at the Clemson Tiger Tune-up held inside the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Complex over the weekend. The final date for qualifiers is February 27, 2011, but the JCSU teams will be inactive on that weekend.

On the women's side, freshman Danielle Williams (St. Andrew, Jamaica) won the 60m dash final in a personal best time of 7.59. She improved her position in the national ranking. Junior Monique Kelly (St. Andrew, Jamaica) finished 5th in 7.71 and senior Lakaevia Tyler (Miami, FL) took 7th in 7.77 after recording 7.72, (PB) in prelims of the 60 meter dash.

Senior Shermaine Williams (St. Andrew, Jamaica) placed 1st overall in the 60 hurdles with a season best time of 8.24; still joint first in the nation. The 4x400m team of freshman Sasha-Gay Cunningham, Monique Kelly, Lakaevia Tyler, Naffene Briscoe won 1st with a time of 3:49.46, SB (converted 3:48.26) and moved up to No. 5 in the national ranking. Cunningham also ran a season best 58.39 in the 400m.

Sophomore Xahnn-Georgia Reid (Clarendon, Jamaica) finished 5th in High Jump and Long Jump with standards of 1.60m and 5.43m, respectively. Reid is now ranked 14th in the LJ and 19th in the HJ going into the final weekend of qualifiers.

For the Golden Bull men, redshirt freshman Gabriel Franklin (Casselberry, FL) ran a 6.92 in the prelims of the 60m dash and a 6.99 in the final for 8th place. Senior Leford Green (St. Catherine, Jamaica) claimed 1st in the 400m in a time of 47.96. Junior Andre Collins (Kingston, Jamaica) won 2nd in the 60m hurdles in 8.11.

Rolston Gabriel timed in at 8.27, (SB) in 60H prelim and returned for an 8.28 finish for 5th in the final. Junior Christopher Sams (Decatur, GA) was 9th overall in the 60H with a personal best 8.49 and missed placing in the final by 2/100th of a second. Horane Holgate measured 14.07 for 4th in Triple Jump and remains 11th in the national ranking going into the final weekend of qualifiers.
