Second home game this season

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team swings back into action on Friday, February 25th against Pfeiffer University at Biddleville Park. First pitch in this non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

JCSU lost their home and season opening doubleheader to Salem International (16-4, 9-1). Senior Kawehi Chan (Honolulu, HI) and Allycia Watanabe (Waipahu, HI) were on the mound for J.C. Smith in the first and second contests, respectively. Chan recorded a 3-RBI homerun in game one and two hits with one run scored in game two.

Johnson C. Smith traveled to Orangeburg, SC for a doubleheader with Claflin University as their second opponent of the season. The Lady Tigers held JCSU scoreless en route to a 13-0 victory in game one. Chan faced 17 batters and allowed eight hits and eight runs. Freshman Ashton Byrd (Atlanta, GA) provided some relief, but gave up five runs and three hits off six at-bats.

The Lady Golden Bulls almost collected their first victory in game two against Claflin, but fell 7-6. Claflin held a 5-2 lead heading into the seventh and final inning. JCSU scored four runs in the 7th, including a 2-RBI single from Watanabe that brought sophomore Alexandria Buckley (Charlotte, NC) and freshman Alexis Hughley (Atlanta, GA) home.

Down 6-5, Claflin scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to stay unbeaten. Now, J.C. Smith will attempt to win their first game(s) against the Lady Falcons of Pfeiffer University. Pfeiffer is currently 2-8 overall after losses to UNC-Pembroke in doubleheader action. The Lady Falcons are 2-4 on the road and 0-8 against non-conference opponents.

“We know they're having some struggles this year, but so are we…we just have to come out and play hard,” said head coach Jovon Times. “We'll have a little more depth this game and we'll be on our home field, hopefully that'll play towards our advantage. It'll be good to see the team in action now that we have everyone on the field.”

Freshman first baseman Jasmine Jackson (Chester, SC) and junior shortstop/pitcher Tenesha Simmons (Melbourne, FL) have just been cleared to play and will make their debut versus Pfeiffer.

JCSU will attempt to crack the win column on Friday, February 25th at 2:00 p.m. inside Biddleville Park against Pfeiffer University.
