The Golden Bulls have dropped the last six matches

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's tennis team lost a non-conference matchup with the University of Charleston (WV) 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Coleman/Cuthbertson Tennis Courts. The match was eventually called due to inclement weather and awarded to the Golden Eagles, who were ahead at the time. JCSU moves to 1-10 overall, while Charleston improves to 6-1 in the standings.

Juniors McKenzie Bean (Hamilton, Bermuda) and Robert Butts (Atlanta, GA) pushed Sam Humphrey and Kyle Barrett to the edge in No. 1 double play. However, Humphrey and Barrett won the point 8-6 for Charleston. Senior Jamil Jones (Atlanta, GA) and freshman Dion Chever (Newport News, VA) fell 8-2 in No. 2 doubles to Richard Williams and Matt Sherba.

Kris Riede and Eric Bodge shut out the duo of senior Barren Smith (Linwood, NJ) and junior Jerald Stuckey (Cincinnati, OH) 8-0 in the No. 3 and final doubles competition. Smith was unsuccessful against Riede (6-1, 6-0) and Stuckey against Jacob Jones (6-0, 6-0) in No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively. The remaining singles matches were unfinished due to rain.

Bean held a 5-1 lead over Barrett in the first set of No. 2 singles, before the match was called.

The Golden Bulls will attempt to snap their winless streak this weekend in the first CIAA Cross Divisional Roundup of the season. JCSU will begin conference play in doubleheaders against Chowan and St. Paul's beginning on Saturday, March 12th at the Coleman/Cuthbertson Tennis Courts. J.C. Smith will return to the courts on Sunday, March 13th to face the same two opponents.
