Game Two Box
Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team dropped both games of a CIAA Northern Division doubleheader (14-3, 13-1) to Winston-Salem State University on Sunday afternoon inside Biddleville Park. JCSU moves to 8-25 overall, 7-10 in the CIAA, and 4-6 in the division; which is currently fourth place with St. Augustine's a game behind. The top four teams in each division compete for the CIAA Championship. The Lady Rams improve to 21-11 overall, 14-1 in the conference, 8-0 in the division and remain in first overall.
Winston-Salem State had too much offensive firepower in both contests for JCSU. After giving up three runs at the top of the first, junior
Samantha Smith (Whiteville, NC) answered with a solo homerun to left field for J.C. Smith's first run. The Lady Rams produced nine more runs before the next JCSU score.
Senior
Kawehi Chan (Honolulu, HI) belted a homer to left field which also scored fellow senior
Ashley Williams (Temple Hills, MD) in the third inning. Despite the big hit, the Lady Golden Bulls faced a 12-3 deficit heading into the fifth inning. Johnson C. Smith failed to score any additional runs and gave up two more in the fifth. WSSU won the first contest 14-3 with the game being called due to the NCAA eight-run rule.
Junior pitcher
Tenesha Simmons (Melbourne, FL) is charged with loss after an 18-hit, 14-run day. Brittany Lane earned the win on the mound for the Lady Rams.
Unfortunately, game two also ended with a JCSU loss due to the NCAA-run rule in the fifth inning. J.C. Smith drew within one in the fourth inning after junior
Elizabeth McElveen (Columbia, SC) crossed home off a sacrifice fly from freshman
Britney Warren (Atlanta, GA). It was the only Johnson C. Smith run scored, but they only trailed 2-1 going into the fifth.
Winston-Salem exploded for nine hits and 11 runs at the top of the fifth, which essentially closed the game for the evening at 13-1.
Senior
Allycia Watanabe (Waipahu, HI) faced 24 batters in the loss and allowed nine runs. Watanabe had two strikeouts with no walks.
Chan, Watanabe, and Williams were recognized as seniors in front of their families and friends. Fortunately the seniors have two more games to try and win at home. Starting with their non-conference doubleheader with Benedict College on Tuesday, April 12th inside Biddleville Park. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
