Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball split games with Morris College on Wednesday afternoon; winning game one 16-3 but dropping a 17-15 decision in game two at Biddleville Park. JCSU moves to 8-21 in the standings after the non-conference doubleheader.

J.C. Smith pretty much put game one out of reach after scoring six runs in the second inning. The Lady Hornets were shut out in the first, but with bases loaded got a run in the second off a batter being hit by a pitch. Senior third baseman Kawehi Chan (Honolulu, HI) started the scoring with a RBI double to left field to bring home senior utility Allycia Watanabe (Waipahu, HI).

Junior catcher Samantha Smith (Whiteville, NC) broke open the game with a 2 RBI triple and then scored on her own by stealing home plate. JCSU produced six runs and four hits in the second. Morris gained two runs at the top of the third, but allowed four more hits and four runs to face an 11-3 deficit.

The Lady Hornets were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest, while JCSU had five runs and six hits in the fourth. Game one was called in the fifth inning due to the NCAA eight-run rule giving Johnson C. Smith a 16-3 win. Freshman centerfielder Britney Warren (Atlanta, GA) had a game-high four RBIs and three hits off three at-bats.

Freshman pitcher Ashton Byrd (Atlanta, GA) is credited with the victory at the mound only allowing five hits and three runs.

Game two started off with a completely different story. Oddly, junior second baseman ShaDella Reese (Atlanta, GA) took the diamond as the pitcher for the first five batters. Morris managed to grasp seven runs and three hits with Reese on the mound. The Golden Bulls trailed 9-2 heading into the second inning.

Both teams continued scoring throughout the game, including a five-run burst from JCSU in the fourth inning. Morris was up 17-15 moving into the bottom of the seventh inning. Junior utility Tenesha Simmons (Melbourne, FL) got the first out on an infield fly to the shortstop.

Smith had a rollercoaster of the events happen during her at-bat. She nailed a triple to center field for a glimmer of hope for the Golden Bulls. However, Smith got caught stealing at home and injured her leg on the slide. Junior left fielder Elizabeth McElveen (Columbia, SC) hit a pop fly to left for the third and final out.

Reese is charged with the loss, though Simmons stepped in for most the pitching. Simmons had three strikeouts, but allowed eight runs and six hits.

Johnson C. Smith will return to the field on Friday, April 8th against Brevard College in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. inside Biddleville Park.
