Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team had a tough day on the diamond after dropping both games (20-0, 5-1) in a non-conference doubleheader to Brevard College on Friday evening inside Biddleville Park. JCSU moves to 8-23 overall while the Tornados improve to 28-13 in the standings.

Game one went completely in the favor of Brevard. Tornado's pitcher Martika Elmore only faced 16 batters in five innings after the game was called due the NCAA eight-run rule. Junior left fielder Elizabeth McElveen (Columbia, SC) got the only hit for the Golden Bulls throughout the contest.

Senior utility Kawehi Chan (Honolulu, HI) took the loss on the mound. Brevard had seven walks, 16 hits, and 20 runs in the victory.

The second contest started off much better for J.C. Smith. Freshman pitcher Ashton Byrd (Atlanta, GA) held the Tornados scoreless in the first inning. In the bottom of the first with bases loaded, senior Allycia Watanabe (Waipahu, HI) singled to a left field gap to score junior Elizabeth McElveen (Columbia, SC) from third.

JCSU gave up one run and two hits in the top of the second for a 1-1 tie. The scoreboard stayed the same until Brevard put up three runs in the fourth inning. Johnson C. Smith struggled with offense the entire evening. Alyssa Miller held the Golden Bulls to only one run and three hits on the mound.

Chan suffered a minor injury on a foul tip and Byrd also had to leave the contest trying to defend home plate on a slide. These two and junior catcher Samantha Smith (Whiteville, NC) should be cleared to return by the next contest.

Johnson C. Smith will take on Winston-Salem State University on Sunday, April 10th at 2:00 p.m. This is the last divisional doubleheader of the regular season and could determine post season play. Seniors Chan, Watanabe, and Ashley Williams (Temple Hills, MD) will be recognizing at the start of the ball game.
