GOLDEN BULLS SOFTBALL DROPS BOTH GAMES IN SEASON OPENING DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST BREVARD

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team fell to Brevard College (3-2, 11-1) in the season opener doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Biddleville Park. JCSU moves to 0-2 in the overall standing, while the Tornados improve to 2-0 after this non-conference matchup.

Game one came down to a pitcher's duel between freshman Stacy Peralta (Brooklyn, NY) and Alyssa Miller of Brevard. After three innings, both pitchers had only allowed one hit and no runs scored. The bats warmed up for both teams in the fourth.

The Tornados held a 2-0 lead with three hits after the top of the fourth. JCSU responded in the bottom of the inning with three hits of their own. Junior second baseman Alexandra Buckley (Charlotte, NC) belted a 2-RBI double to bring home sophomore Jasmine Jackson (Chester, SC) and senior Elizabeth McElveen (Florence, SC). The inning came to a close tied 2-2.

In the fifth, Kayla Clemens hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield which scored teammate Meredith Davenport from third. Neither team would score any additions runs and Brevard escaped with a 3-2 victory.

The second game was less favorable for the Golden Bulls. JCSU faced a 3-0 deficit after the top of the first inning. Johnson C. Smith scored their only run of the contest in the bottom of the same inning. Senior catcher and captain Samantha Smith (Whiteville, NC) got on base with a bunt. She stole all three of the remaining bases to cross home plate.

Game two eventually ending in the fifth inning due to the NCAA eight-run rule. JCSU allowed eight runs and 10 hits in the fourth and fifth innings combined. Down 11-1 in the bottom of the fifth, all three Golden Bull batters struck out to conclude the contest.

Peralta pitched both games with no relief and debuts with a 0-2 record.

JCSU will soon return to the diamond to face Salem International University on Saturday, February 11th. First pitch in this non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Biddleville Park.
