Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team easily beat Morris College (18-17; 14-0) in a non-conference doubleheader during their first ever “Strike Out Cancer” game held inside Biddleville Park on Wednesday afternoon. JCSU improves to 10-19 overall after both wins.
The Golden Bulls wore pink uniforms to raise awareness about cancer prevention. The team acknowledged Ms. Gloria Lockhart and presented her with a gift bag in between contests as a breast cancer survivor.
Game one started off completely lopsided in favor of JCSU. Sophomore
Brittany Rowe (Cincinnati, OH) was red hot at the mound in her pitching debut. After three innings, the Golden Bulls built a 13-0 lead. Rowe had a no-hitter going into the fourth and went three up, three down in the first three innings.
JCSU had six hits and eight runs scored in the third to take a commanding double digit advantage (13-0). Just when it looked like the game would end early, the Hornets got going on offense. Morris managed to produce three hits and five runs off Rowe.
Freshman
Stacy Peralta (Brooklyn, NY) stepped in to relief Rowe in the middle of the fourth. The Hornets concluded the inning with nine runs to cut their deficit down to four (13-9). JCSU failed to score in the bottom of the inning. Morris rattled off six more runs in the fifth to grab a 15-13 lead.
Johnson C. Smith regenerated some their offense in the bottom of the fifth. Seniors
Samantha Smith (Whiteville, NC) and
Elizabeth McElveen (Florence, SC) each had hits that accounted for 2 RBIs. The Golden Bulls had four hits and five runs to recapture the lead, 18-15.
The Hornets scored two final runs at the top of sixth, but JCSU held on for the victory. Rowe is credited with the win and Peralta gets the save. Sophomore
Jasmine Jackson (Chester, SC) led the team with four hits, five RBIs, and two runs scored.
The second contest was dominated by the Golden Bulls from beginning to end. Rowe dictated the pace again at the mound. She faced 16 batters with no runs allowed, walked five, and only gave up two hits.
JCSU had a 5-0 advantage heading into the fourth. The Golden Bulls exploded with nine runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 14-0 lead. The game came to a conclusion in the fifth inning due to the NCAA eight-run rule. This was the first time all season; JCSU imposed the mercy rule on their opponent.
The Golden Bulls return to the diamond on Saturday, March 24th to face Belmont Abbey College in Biddleville Park. Game one in the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
