Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team split games with Shaw University in a CIAA Southern Divisional Doubleheader on Friday afternoon inside Biddleville Park. JCSU improves to 16-24 overall, 6-9 in the CIAA, and 4-4 in the division.

The first contest was played close throughout. Shaw scored two runs in the third; then the Golden Bulls tied the score with two runs in the fourth. The Lady Bears broke the tie with a RBI sacrifice fly to centerfield in the sixth. JCSU gave up another run in the top of the seventh to face a 4-2 deficit.

Johnson C. Smith failed to produce another run and dropped game one. Freshman Stacy Peralta (Brooklyn, NY) was charged with the loss after pitching the complete game. Despite allowing 11 hits and four runs, Peralta had four strikeouts.

In between contests, the Golden Bulls recognized their four seniors playing in the last regular season home game. Seniors Elizabeth McElveen (Florence, SC), ShaDella Reese (Atlanta, GA), Tenesha Simmons (Melbourne, FL), and Samantha Smith (Whiteville, NC) were escorted by family and friends to home plate to receive their gifts and acknowledgements.

After all the pageantry, JCSU focused in and took care of business. Reese sparked the scoring with a two-run homerun blast to centerfield in the second inning. The Golden Bulls racked up six hits and three runs in the second for a 3-0 lead.

Sophomore Jena Rae Serranzana (Panorama City, CA) scored another run in the third off an interference call at home plate. Shaw trailed 4-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Fittingly, the seniors closed out the game with solid hitting.

With bases loaded, Simmons singled to the shortstop for an RBI to score Reese from third. Smith followed with a RBI single to left field to bring home junior Alexandra Buckley (Charlotte, NC) from third. McElveen ended up concluding the contest with a 2-RBI double up the middle, which brought in the seventh and eighth runs.

JCSU won game two 8-0 in the sixth due to the NCAA eight-run rule. Peralta redeemed herself with the shutout victory. She only allowed two hits with two Ks.

Before heading to the CIAA Softball Tournament in Petersburg, VA on April 19th, the Golden Bulls will face Benedict College on Monday, April 16th in Columbia, SC for the regular season finale. First pitch in the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
