Williams placed 3rd in a photo finish

London, U.K. - Johnson C. Smith University alumnae Shermaine Williams narrowly missed out on qualifying for the finals of the women's 100 meter hurdles on Tuesday afternoon at the 2012 London Summer Olympics held inside Olympic Stadium. Williams had a photo finish to place third in Heat One with a time of 12.83 as a competitor for Jamaica. The finals (medal round) will be held later this afternoon (August 7th) at 4:00 p.m. (EST).

Dawn Harper from the United States clocked a time of 12.46 to take first in Heat One. Williams and Beate Schrott of Austria both recorded a time of 12.83, but Schrott was credited with finishing second after the photographic results were viewed.

The semifinals consisted of three heats. The top two finishers of each heat automatically qualified for the finals, along with the next two fastest times. Williams, a native of St. Andrew, was the only Jamaican competitor in the semifinals.
Kellie Wells (12.51), Lolo Jones (12.71), and Harper will all represent the United States in the finals of the event. Sally Pearson of Australia had the fastest qualifying time and a season best of 12.39.

This year, Williams made her Olympic debut in London as the first ever female Olympian from JCSU. She graduated from Johnson C. Smith University in 2011 Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Biology. Williams will continue to explore her options of competing in events while in Europe.
