Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team dropped both games in the 2013 season opening doubleheader against Brevard College (3-0; 14-0) on Tuesday afternoon at Biddleville Park. JCSU falls to 0-2 in the standings, while the Tornadoes improve to 2-0.

Game one was a defensive struggle leaning slightly in favor of the Tornadoes. Sophomore Stacy Peralta (Brooklyn, NY) commanded the mound for the majority of the contest. However, there was a minor slip-up in the first inning causing a deficit. Alyssa Miller singled to get on base then stole second. Brittany Jones smacked a RBI triple to right center, which brought home Miller.

Peralta got out of the inning only allowing that one run, but gave up three hits. JCSU went three up and three down at the bottom of the first. The next four innings were scoreless on both sides. Brevard erupted in the sixth with four hits and two runs.

The Golden Bulls failed to score a run in the contest and only produced one hit. Junior Jasmine Jackson (Chester, SC) singled in the fifth inning for JCSU's only hit. Jamie Hrobak earned the win for Brevard with 11 strikeouts and just the hit.

Peralta gave up 13 hits and three runs in the loss.

Freshman Melissa Vierra (Tracy, CA) started off at pitcher in the second game. Vierra showed some first time jitters on the mound. She gave up eight runs and four hits all in the first inning. Peralta eventually checked back in and closed out the game.

JCSU did not fare much better on the offensive end in the second contest. Kayla Clemens pitched the second game for Brevard and earned seven strikeouts with no hits or runs allowed. The Tornadoes recorded two runs in the second inning and four more runs in the fourth en route to a 14-0 victory. The game was called in the fifth inning due to the NCAA seven-run rule.

“This is no time to panic; it was our first game and we're still young,” said first year head coach Warren Brooks. “It was day and night when you compare the first game to the second game. We did some good things on defense, especially in the first game. Looking at the big picture, we're a young team. We had six players that played today for their first time ever. We're one team with one goal and that's winning; we'll be okay.”

The Golden Bulls will now hit the road and travel to Winston-Salem, NC for the first CIAA cross-divisional roundup. JCSU will face Elizabeth City State on Saturday, February 16th at 3:00 p.m. and then Virginia State on Sunday, February 17th at 11:00 a.m.
