Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team dropped both games of a CIAA doubleheader against Chowan University (15-6; 10-2) on Saturday afternoon at Biddleville Park. JCSU moves to 4-13 overall and 2-5 in conference; while the Hawks improve to 10-13 overall and 7-0 in the CIAA.

The Golden Bulls faced an insurmountable deficit after the third inning. Chowan scored two runs in the first, one run in the second, and seven runs in the third. Sophomore first baseman Kenya Austin (Virginia Beach, VA) scored a run in the first and freshman Alicia Chaudion (Greenwood, SC) added a run in the second.

JCSU had their most productive inning at the bottom of the fourth. Down 14-2, the Golden Bulls recorded four hits and three runs. Senior short stop Alexandra Buckley (Charlotte, NC) hit a two-RBI shot to the second baseman, which brought home juniors Britney Warren (Atlanta, GA) and Jasmine Jackson (Chester, SC).

Both teams scored one final run in the fifth inning to account for the final score. Chowan earned the victory after five innings due to the NCAA eight-run rule. Alora Lincoln is credited with the win for the Hawks with three strikeouts. Freshman Melissa Vierra (Tracy, CA) had two strikeouts for JCSU in the loss.

Game two was just as rough for JCSU as the first contest. Chowan exploded with six runs in the second inning to grab a 7-0 advantage heading into the third. In the bottom of the third, sophomore Stacy Peralta smacked a double to right field to take base. Austin was the next batter and took base after being hit by a pitch. Freshman Michela Vaughn (Atlanta, GA) loaded the bases with a single to second base.

Warren hit a RBI single to bring Peralta across home plate. Chaudion singled up the middle to score Austin from third. Those would be the only runs produced by the Golden Bulls. Meanwhile, the Hawks tacked on two more runs in the fourth and one final run in the fifth. JCSU failed to score and dropped the second game due to the NCAA eight-run rule again.

Courtney Groce was solid on the mound with nine Ks in the victory. Vierra pulled double duty and was charged with a second loss.

JCSU will return to their home diamond on Monday, March 18th to play Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. First pitch in this non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Biddleville Park.
