Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader (19-1, 10-2) against Brevard College on Thursday evening at Biddleville Park. JCSU moves to 3-9 in the overall standings, while the Tornadoes improve to 7-12 overall.

The Golden Bulls appeared outmatched early in the first contest. JCSU faced a 12-0 deficit heading into the bottom of the third inning. Junior Ashton Byrd (Atlanta, GA) hit a single up the middle in the third. Byrd eventually stole the next three bases, including home plate off a wild pitch. That would be the only run scored for the Golden Bulls.

Brevard scored seven more runs in the fourth inning to take a 19-1 lead. The conclusion came to a close in the fifth inning due to the NCAA eight-run rule.

Sophomore pitcher Stacy Peralta (Brooklyn, NY) is charged with the loss; though she did produce two strikeouts.

JCSU slightly fell behind early in game two. The Tornadoes racked up three hits and three runs to include a three RBI homerun by Brittany Tucker. Both teams went scoreless in the second inning. Alyssa Miller hit a triple to center field and later scored in the third.

The Golden Bulls improved defensively in the second game, but struggled on offense. Senior shortstop Alexandra Buckley (Charlotte, NC) hit a sacrifice fly to bring home sophomore first baseman Kenya Austin (Virginia Beach, VA) from third.

The Tornadoes extended their advantage to 10-1 with three runs scored in both the sixth and seventh innings. The only hit and run scored in the seventh for JCSU was a homer by Peralta at the top of the lineup.

Freshman Melissa Vierra (Tracy, CA) is credited with the loss on the mound. Vierra had one strikeout, but allowed 11 hits and 10 runs.

JCSU will return to the diamond for the CIAA cross-divisional roundup against Bowie State University on Saturday, March 9th. The Golden Bulls will play BSU at 11:00 a.m. and then challenging Lincoln University of PA at 2:00 p.m. Virginia Union University will be hosting the roundup in Richmond, VA.
