Two elected All-CIAA, three make All-Rookie

Petersburg, VA – The Johnson C. Smith University softball team earned five honors during the Spring Sports Festival Awards Banquet on Wednesday evening on the campus of Virginia State. Senior short stop Alexandra Buckley (Charlotte, NC) and junior right fielder Britney Warren (Atlanta, GA) were selected to the All-CIAA Second Team. Freshmen pitcher Melissa Vierra (Tracy, CA), catcher Alicia Chaudion (Greenwood, SC), and outfielder Cabrisha Anderson (Atlanta, GA) claimed spots on the All-Rookie Team.

Buckley played in 30 games and started in 29 games for JCSU. She batted .329 during the season and had 27 hits, including three doubles, two triples, and a homerun. Buckley drove in 17 and scored 23 times, and had a .433 on-base percentage.

Warren played in and started 23 games in the outfield. She had a batting average of .282 with 20 hits.  Warren tallied 13 RBIs and 13 runs scored. She had an on-base percentage of .363, a slugging percentage of .324, and stole 13 bases.

The three All-Rookie selections played in and started 30 or more games. Vierra had a record of 6-13 on the mound with one save and 56 strikeouts. She played in and started 34 games with 98 at-bats. Vierra batted .357 and had a team-high 35 hits, including four doubles, a triple, and a homerun. She drove in 18 runs and scored 16 times.

Chaudion played in 33 games and started 32 behind the plate. She had an on-base percentage of .406 with 22 hits, 14 RBIs, and 16 runs scored. Chaudion batted .268 and a slugging percentage of .354.

The final honoree Anderson played in and started all 37 games. She drove in 13 runs and scored 20 times. Anderson had 24 hits, including two doubles, two triples, and a homerun. She had an on-base percentage of .346, fielding percentage of .864, and slugging percentage of .355.

This is the most postseason awards earned by the Golden Bulls since 2007, the last year JCSU won their division.

Competition for the 2013 CIAA Championship begins on Thursday, April 18th. JCSU will face the top-seed out of the Northern Division Chowan University at 12 noon inside the Petersburg Softball Complex. This is a double-elimination tournament.
