Petersburg, VA – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball dropped games to Chowan University (6-3) and Virginia Union University (6-5) on Thursday afternoon to be eliminated from the 2013 CIAA Championships at the Petersburg Softball Complex. JCSU concludes the season with an overall record of 11-28.

The Golden Bulls fell into a 6-0 hole against the Northern top-seed Chowan in game one. The Hawks produced three runs in the first and two runs in the second for a lead. Unfortunately, JCSU remained scoreless until the sixth inning. Chowan scored their sixth and final run in the bottom of the fifth.

In the sixth, junior outfielder Ashton Byrd (Atlanta, GA) drilled a triple to left center and scored off a throwing error from centerfield. Later in the seventh, freshman Alicia Chaudion (Greenwood, SC) and Michela Vaughn (Atlanta, GA) both scored unearned runs. However, the contest ended with the next batter striking out.

Sophomore pitcher Stacy Peralta (Brooklyn, NY) is charged with the loss. She faced 28 at the plate and allowed seven hits and six runs with one strikeout. Chaudion was the offensive surge with three hits and one run scored off three at-bats.

In game two, JCSU got off to a better start offensively. Neither team scored in the first, but the Golden Bulls added two runs in the second for a 2-0 advantage. The Lady Panthers responded with four runs and five hits in the third to take a 4-2 lead.

In the fourth inning, junior Britney Warren (Atlanta, GA) reached on an error by the second baseman and scored later off a wild pitch. JCSU recaptured the lead (5-4) with two runs and three hits in the top of the fifth. Virginia Union reemerged at the bottom of the sixth with two runs and three hits of their own.

Down 6-5 going into the seventh, the Golden Bulls felt the pressure. JCSU went three up and three down in the top of the seventh, resulting in the loss. Peralta took her second loss of the day pitching. She had three strikeouts, but allowed 11 hits and six runs.

The Golden Bulls only have one senior on the roster and could potentially return their two All-CIAA and three All-Rookie players.
