Box Score 2 Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team defeated Salem University International (9-2 | 5-3) in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, February 23rd at Biddleville Park. JCSU improves to 2-2 overall and the Lady Tigers open their season at 0-2.
The Golden Bulls also held their annual Strikeout Cancer game to bring awareness to breast cancer detection and prevention. Both teams wore pink accessories and Charlotte's Pink Lady fire truck was on site.
In the first game, both team remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning. Junior centerfielder
Cabrisha Anderson (Atlanta, GA) blasted a triple to right center to bring home junior pitcher
Stacy Peralta (Brooklyn, NY). Sophomore catcher
Monique Jefferson (West Hills, CA) hit a 3-RBI double to left field. JCSU finished the inning with five runs and five hits.
Salem International recorded four hits and two runs at the top of the fourth. JCSU held a 5-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore
Imani Scott (Atlanta, GA) scored after freshman shortstop
Jocelyn Hernandez (Bloomington, CA) nailed a doubled to left field. The Tigers trailed 6-2 until the bottom of the sixth inning.
JCSU produced three more runs and two hits in the sixth. The Golden Bulls held Salem International scoreless in the top of the seventh for a 9-2 victory.
Freshman
Victoria Lopez (San Diego, CA) earned the win on the mound. Lopez pitched six innings with four strikeouts, five hits and two runs allowed. Sophomore
Melissa Vierra (Tracy, CA) picked up the save in the seventh.
Jefferson had five RBIs and three hits. Hernandez scored two runs, along with two RBIs and three hits.
In the second game, the Golden Bulls jumped out to a 5-0 lead by scoring two runs in the second and three runs in the third. Salem International managed to produce three runs in the fifth. Those would be the only runs of the contest.
Peralta had two strikeouts in her victory on the mound. As a team, JCSU had seven hits, five RBIs, and four walks.
The Golden Bulls return to the diamond on Saturday, March 1st against Benedict College. First pitch in this non-conference doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m. in Columbia, SC.
