Raleigh, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team defeated Virginia Union University 9-7, but lost to Chowan University 12-2 on the first day of the CIAA Roundup held at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex on March 22nd. JCSU moves to 5-11 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The Golden Bulls grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Freshman outfielder
Breanna Archibald (Wendell, NC) hit a sacrifice fly to right field which brought home sophomore second baseman
Imani Scott (Atlanta, GA). Later in the inning, freshman
Miranda Ricafrente (Jacksonville, FL) singled up the middle for two RBIs. Junior centerfielder
Cabrisha Anderson (Atlanta, GA) and sophomore catcher
Monique Jefferson (West Hills, CA) came home off the hit from Ricafrente.
Renesha Chiles put the Lady Panthers on the scoreboard with a homerun in the top of the second. JCSU held a 5-1 lead going into the third inning. Tyana Daniels came home from third off a wild pitch in the third. However, runs from freshman third baseman

Jasmin Harris (Stone Mountain, GA) increased the Golden Bulls' lead to 7-2 going into the fourth.
Virginia Union erupted with five hits and three runs at the top of the fourth. JCSU did not produce a run in the bottom of the fourth. The Lady Panthers were held scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings. Hasty homered in the fifth inning. Harris batted in senior

JCSU allowed two more runs at the top of the seventh. Freshman pitcher
Victoria Lopez (San Diego, CA) closed out the game on the mound and sealed the 9-7 win.
In game two, Chowan dominated the contest from start to finish. The Hawks jumped out to an 11-0 lead heading into the fourth. JCSU allowed five runs in the second and six runs in the third inning for the deficit. The Golden Bulls trailed 12-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
Hasty avoided the shutout with a RBI triple in the bottom of the fourth. Archibald crossed home plate and Hasty later scored off a wild pitch. Those would be the only runs scored by the Golden Bulls in the game. Chowan earned a 12-2 win after the fifth inning due to the NCAA eight-run rule.
The Golden Bulls return to action for day two of the CIAA Roundup on Sunday, March 23rd. JCSU will play Elizabeth City State University at 10:00 a.m. Following that game, the Golden Bulls will face Virginia State University at 3:00 p.m. All games will be played at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
