Victoria Lopez pitched her first career shutout in a 9-0 win over Elizabeth City State during the CIAA Roundup

Raleigh, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team dominated Elizabeth City State University for a 9-0 victory on the second day of competition in the CIAA Roundup held at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex on March 23rd. JCSU improves to 6-11 overall and 2-1 in conference; the Lady Vikings move to 5-11 overall and 3-6 in the CIAA standings.
The Golden Bulls did all of their damage for the win in the second and third innings. Both teams were scoreless in the first inning. Freshman first baseman
Miranda Ricafrente (Jacksonville, FL) started the scoring with a RBI double to bring home sophomore catcher
Monique Jefferson (West Hills, CA). JCSU produced two hits and five runs in the top of the second.
Freshman pitcher
Victoria Lopez (San Diego, CA) had two strike outs and a popup to the shortstop in the bottom of the second. Jefferson smacked a homerun as the first batter in the top of the third inning. The Golden Bulls had three hits and added four runs throughout the third. The Lady Vikings trailed 9-0 heading into the bottom of the third.
For the remainder of the contest, Lopez only allowed three hits. JCSU earned a 9-0 victory in five innings due to the NCAA eight-run rule.
In addition to the production from Ricafrente and Jefferson, freshman third baseman
Morgan Hasty (Salem, IN) had a hit, two RBIs, and scored two runs. Junior catcher
Maci Black (Greensboro, NC) also had an RBI, a hit, and two runs scored.
JCSU was scheduled to play Virginia State University at 3:00 p.m.; however the game was cancelled due to inclement weather. The Golden Bulls will play VSU on Monday, March 24th at 10:00 a.m. JCSU will also take on Bowie State University and Lincoln University to conclude the roundup. All games will be played at the Walnut Creek Complex.
