Box Score 2 JCSU Softball Sweeps Doubleheader from Shaw
Charlotte, N.C. (March 30, 2015) — The Johnson C. Smith softball team swept a doubleheader from Shaw on Sunday, March 29 at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh.
In game one, JCSU fell behind 1-0 in the second inning, but took the lead in the top of the third thanks to a
Tia Mahoney (Hartwell, Ga.) solo home run. After a
Melissa Vierra (Tracy, Ca.) single, sophomore Morgan hasty laced an RBI single down the right field line to put JCSU ahead 2-1.
Shaw jumped ahead 4-2 in the fourth when Britt Kline launched a two-run homer. JCSU scratched across a run in the top of the fifth, this time on a Hasty homer to make it 4-3. Shaw responded with a run in the fifth to make it 5-3.
Down to the last at-bat for the Golden Bulls, JCSU got a bunt single from
Cabrisha Anderson (Atlanta, Ga.). Anderson would steal second and later scored on a
Victoria Lopez (San Diego, Ca.) single to trim the lead to 5-4. JCSU's Hasty then delivered a two-run blast to put the Golden Bulls ahead 6-5.
Hasty finished game one going two-for-four with four RBI, including two homers. JCSU's Mahoney also had an RBI on a one-for-four outing.
JCSU then shut down the Bears in the seventh to take the win.
In game two, JCSU jumped on Shaw early, scoring seven runs in the first. After loading the bases, Hasty delivered a two RBI single to make it 2-0. Later in the inning, Mahoney also delivered a two RBI single putting JCSU up 7-0. The Golden Bulls would add one run in the second and third innings for the 9-0 advantage. The Golden Bulls continued their offensive onslaught in the seventh by plating two more runs, this time on a two-run double by
Maci Black (Greensboro, N.C.). Shaw scratched a run across in the fifth inning, but could not draw any closer, as JCSU took the 11-1 win.
With the pair of wins, JCSU improves to 6-10 overall, 4-4 in CIAA play.
The Golden Bulls will next play on April 9 in a home nonconference doubleheader with Benedict.
