JCSU Softball Sweeps Doubleheader From Benedict

Box Score 2 Charlotte, N.C. (April 9, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith University softball team swept a nonconference doubleheader from Benedict College on Thursday afternoon at Biddleville Park.
In game one, JCSU fell behind 2-0 in the first inning when Benedict capitalized on a JCSU throwing error. The Tigers then got a two-RBI single from Sabrya Brooks to take the early lead. Benedict stretched their lead to 3-0 by manufacturing a run in the third. Following a single and a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to third, Jasmine Sledge punched a single through the left side for the RBI.
The Golden Bulls would cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth inning after
Maci Black (Greensboro, N.C.) reached on a single.
Cabrisha Anderson (Atlanta, Ga.) would get on base via a Tiger error, sending Black to second.
Tia Mahoney (Hartwell, Ga.) laced an RBI double to center field, but Anderson was thrown out at home on the play.
Jocelyn Hernandez (Bloomington, Ca.) would provide the other JCSU run when she rapped a single, scoring Mahoney.
The Tigers added a run in the sixth to make it 4-2, but JCSU responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the 5-4 lead. With runners on first and second, Mahoney delivered again, this time with an RBI single to make it 4-3. A Hernandez ground out tied the game at 4-4 and
Victoria Lopez (San Diego, Ca.) put the game-winner across with a sacrifice fly to center, plating Mahoney.
Lopez (4-4) then shut down the Tigers in the seventh after yielding a bunt single. Lopez struck out two in the final frame and then forced a fly out for the third out to earn the complete-game win.
Game two saw JCSU jump ahead 6-0 after the third inning, but allowed Benedict to score six in the fourth to tie it at 6-6. JCSU added two runs each in the fourth and the fifth inning, with the big hit coming on a two-run home run by sophomore
Morgan Hasty (Salem, Ind.). Benedict would close to within 10-9 in the sixth, but JCSU's Lopez came in to earn the save, her first of the year. Starting pitcher
Stacy Peralta (Brooklyn, N.Y.) earned the win, improving to 2-6 on the year.
The Golden Bulls improve to 8-10 overall with the doubleheader sweep and will return to action on Saturday, April 11 at 1:00 p.m. with a nonconference twin bill against Bluefield State.
