Tovea Jenkins Wins 400m at Penn State Nationals

Charlotte, N.C. (Feb. 1, 2016) - Johnson C. Smith University track and field standout Tovea Jenkins led the way this past weekend by winning the 400 meter title and as a team, the JCSU women posted nine NCAA provisional qualifying times and one automatic qualifying mark at the Penn State Nationals held at the Ashenfelter Track in University Park, Pa.

Jenkins, a St. James, Jamaica product, took the crown with a provisional qualifying mark of 54.91, which is her best time of the season. She finished nearly a full second in front of the second place finisher from Stanford in the event which featured several division one opponents.

Fellan Ferguson (Kingston, Jamaica) also continued her strong indoor season, as she clocked an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 2:07.46 in the 800m, which also broke her own JCSU record that she set last March at the NCAA Championships.

Also securing NCAA provisional marks were Mayah Edwards (Kingston, Jamaica) and Trudy-Ann Richards in the 60m. Edwards posted a 7.66 while Richards returned a 7.67, both in the semifinals. Both times were improved over their times in the preliminaries, which were also provisional marks.

In the 200m, Kendra Clarke (Edmonton, Alberta) and secured a provisional time of 24.93, finishing 7th overall. Clarke also secured a provisional mark in the 400m with a 54.56, finishing 6th.

In the 800m, Domenique Julius-Williams (Oshawa, Ontario) returned a 2:13.85 which is also a provisional time and earned her 8th place.

JCSU also managed to record a provisional qualifying time in the women's 4x400. The team of Clarke, Julius-Williams, Crystal Campbell (St. Catherine, Jamaica), and Jenkins recorded a time of 3:46.42, good for 4th place in the event.

JCSU will now focus their attention on preparing for the CIAA Indoor Championships which will be held on Feb. 14-15 at the JDL FastTrack in Winston-Salem, N.C.
