JCSU Softball Dismantles Virginia Union at CIAA Roundup, 20-5

Raleigh, N.C. (March 18, 2016) – The Johnson C. Smith softball team erupted for a 19 hits  in game three of the CIAA Roundup on their way to dismantling Virginia Union, 20-5 at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Friday night.

The Golden Bulls (2-9, 1-2 CIAA) exploded for eight runs in the top of the first, sending 12 batters to the plate.  In that frame, JCSU touched VUU starting pitcher Shontel Linnett for six hits, including doubles by Morgan Hasty (Salem, Ind.) and Imani Scott (Atlanta, Ga.).  After holding the Panthers in check in the bottom of the first, the Golden Bulls added two more runs in the second inning to jump ahead 10-0.  Virginia Union scratched a run across in the third to make it 10-1, but the Golden Bulls plated seven more in the fourth inning to jump ahead 17-1.   The big blow for JCSU came when Monique Jefferson (West Hills, Ca.) belted her first homerun of the season to center field  to leadoff the inning.  Tia Mahoney (Hartwell, Ga.) also had two RBI in the inning after doubling down the left field line.

The Golden Bulls pushed three more runs across in the fifth inning to push their lead to 20-3.  Virginia Union was able to score twice in the fifth before JCSU's Mariah Harris (New Bern, N.C.) wrapped up the game, forcing a Panther flyout.  Harris earned the complete-game win, her second of the year, scattering eight hits and while striking out three.

Earlier in the afternoon, JCSU dropped an 8-0 decision to Northern Division foe Chowan in game one and an 8-4 game to Bowie State in game two.

Against the Hawks, the Golden Bulls were limited to just two hits, as Chowan pitcher Kayla Robins was nearly flawless . The Hawks plated four runs in the third inning, by stringing together four hits, including a leadoff double.  Chowan would then add a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take the 8-0 win.

In game two of the afternoon, Bowie State jumped to a 6-1 lead and never looked back in downing JCSU 8-4.  The Bulldogs did the most damage in the third inning by scoring five runs.  The Bulldogs got back-to-back homeruns to blow the game open.

CIAA officials extended day one of the roundup to a tripleheader for each team, in anticipation of inclement weather that is expected in the Raleigh area on Saturday and part of Sunday.

Weather permitting, JCSU will take on Virginia State on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m.
