Box Score Raleigh, N.C. (March 19, 2016) – Virginia State University came back from a late one-run deficit by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning to squeeze out an 11-8 win over the Johnson C. Smith University softball team at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Each team was able to get on the board in the first inning, with VSU taking the 3-1 lead.  JCSU's run came when Tia Greene (Huntersville, N.C.) singled to left field, scoring Tia Mahoney (Hartwell, Ga.). The Golden Bulls would knot the game at 3-3 by scoring a pair of runs in the fourth inning thanks to a Melissa Vierra (Tracy, Ca.) RBI single.  She would later score on a fielder's choice when Imani Scott (Atlanta, Ga.) grounded out to shortstop.

In the fifth, JCSU plated five runs to take the 8-3 lead thanks to four walks and a Trojan error.  JCSU got RBI singles from both Vierra and Scott in the frame.

VSU responded with four runs in the sixth to draw to within 8-7 after putting together four hits, three of which were for extra bases.  The Trojans again struck for four runs in the seventh to go ahead 11-8, again stringing together two doubles and a triple.  In the JCSU seventh, the Golden Bulls did put two runners on, but a groundout to shortstop ended the game.

Offensively, Vierra went 3-of-4 with two RBI, scoring twice, while Scott went 1-of-3 with an RBI.  Green also had a productive day at the place, going 2-of-4 with an RBI and scored once

The loss drops JCSU to 2-10, 1-3 in CIAA play.  The Golden Bulls will look to even their CIAA record on Sunday, as they finish the roundup with games against Elizabeth City State and Lincoln.
