JCSU Softball Hammers Livingstone, 14-0 and 17-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Charlotte, N.C. (March 23, 2016) – The homestanding Johnson C. Smith University softball team battered rival Livingstone, taking 14-0 and 17-0 wins over the Blue Bears in a doubleheader at Biddleville Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Leading 2-0 after the first inning of game one, JCSU plated nine runs in the second frame to go ahead 11-0.  The Golden Bulls had nine hits in the inning, four of which went for extra bases.  Jocelyn Hernandez (Bloomington, Ca.) had two doubles in the inning with Imani Scott (Atlanta, Ga.) also registering a double.  Teammate Breanna Archibald (Wendell, N.C.) had the other extra base hit of the inning with a triple.

JCSU added three runs in the fourth inning to provide the eventual 14-0 final. 

Archibald led JCSU on a 2-for-3 outing, driving in three RBI. 

Hernandez, Tia Mahoney (Hartwell, Ga.), Morgan Hasty (Salem, Ind.) and Scott all had two RBI in the win.

Melissa Vierra (Tracy, Ca.) earned the pitching win, improving to 2-0 on the season, with a three-hit shutout.  She managed to strike out six while allowing just two walks.

In game two, JCSU again wasted no time, jumping on Livingstone 9-0 in the first inning.  The big hit came when Hernandez, batting for the second time in the inning, took a 1-0 offering to left- center for a grand slam, her second home run of the year.

After extending the lead to 10-0 in the second, JCSU erupted for four more runs in the third.  The big hit was a three-run shot from Hasty, her second on the season.  Three more JCSU runs in the fourth inning provided the 17-0 final.

Hernandez led the way once more, going 2-for-4 with four RBI while Hasty went 1-for-3 with three RBI.  Vierra also had two RBI on a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Monique Jefferson (West Hills, Ca.), Victoria Lopez (San Diego, Ca.), Azha McNeil (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Scott each had one RBI in game two for the Golden Bulls.

Lopez also got the win in the circle, improving to 2-6 on the season.  She scattered three hits and struck out five in the complete-game shutout.

The wins improve JCSU to 6-10 overall, 5-3 in CIAA play while Livingstone drops to 3-11 overall and 1-7 in league play.

JCSU will next take to the field on April 9, hosting CIAA Southern Division foe St. Augustine's for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
