Raleigh, N.C. (April 27, 2016) – The Johnson C. Smith University softball team was eliminated from contention at the 2016 CIAA Softball Tournament, dropping games against Bowie State and Virginia State on Thursday at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.

Game one saw Bowie State jump out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning, but JCSU quickly cut the Bulldog lead to 3-2 when Melissa Vierra (Tracy, Ca.) led off with a double to left center.
Breanna Archibald (Wendell, N.C.) would drive Vierra home when she doubled down the left field line.  Another double from Victoria Lopez (San Diego, Cal.) brought Archibald around to cut the lead to 3-2.

Bowie State would score four runs in the fourth inning, thanks to a triple and two doubles to take the 7-2 lead that would stand the rest of the way, as JCSU would only manage two hits over the final three frames.

Relegated to the losers bracket, the Golden Bulls then took on the Northern Division's fourth-seeded Virginia State Trojans in an elimination game.

VSU wasted no time, plating two runs in the first and three more in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.  JCSU would cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the second when, following a
Morgan Hasty (Salem, Ind.) single, Archibald doubled to left center, bringing Hasty in to score.  Archibald would later score on a VSU error to make it 5-2.

VSU would score runs in the third and fourth inning to make it 7-2, then added a pair of runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh to take the 10-3 lead into JCSU's final at-bat. After back-to-back singles from Imani Scott (Atlanta, Ga.) and Jocelyn Hernandez (Bloomington, Ca.),
Tia Mahoney (Hartwell, Ga.) would load the bases with a single of her own.
Azha McNeil (Fayetteville, N.C.) would then drive in JCSU's only run of the inning when she reached on a fielder's choice, driving in Scott from third.  The game would end with a groundout to third, with VSU eliminating JCSU 10-4.

JCSU wraps up their season, finishing 10-18 overall, while VSU advances to play in a second elimination game on Friday morning against Fayetteville State.
