Box Score 2 Charlotte, N.C. (April 9, 2016) – The Johnson C. Smith University softball team swept a CIAA Southern Divisional doubleheader from visiting St. Augustine's University by 8-0 and 6-5 scores on Saturday afternoon from a sunny, unseasonably cool and windy Biddleville Park.
In game one, JCSU jumped on the Falcons early by plating seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. In the inning, JCSU started an offensive onslaught that featured four hits, including a triple from
Tia Mahoney (Hartwell, Ga.) and a double from senior outfielder
Imani Scott (Atlanta, Ga.). Mahoney would take the offering to the left center gap and raced around for the RBI stand-up triple. She would later score on a single to left field from junior third baseman
Morgan Hasty (Salem, Ind.). The JCSU lead would expand to 4-0 after a two-RBI single from
Monique Jefferson (West Hills, Ca.). Scott's two-run double pushed the lead to 7-0 before the Falcons ended the inning on a pop-up.
After holding the Falcons in check in the second, the Golden Bulls made it an 8-0 game thanks to a Falcon error.
Tia Greene (Huntersville, N.C.) scored the JCSU run after reaching on a walk and later stealing second base. She raced home on a throwing error by the Falcon second baseman after
Melisa Vierra (Tracy, Ca.) put it in play up the middle.
JCSU hurler
Victoria Lopez (San Diego, Ca.) pitched a gem, allowing two hits and striking out two SAU batters to earn her third win on the season in a complete-game five inning shutout.
In game two, the Falcons scored a pair of runs in the first and second innings to bolt to a 4-0 lead. Pitcher Marley Parker had the big hit, a two-run blast in the first to put the Falcons ahead. Marley would also hold the JCSU bats in check through most of the game, but the Golden Bulls broke through in the sixth inning.
Down 5-0, JCSU got another triple from Mahoney. She would then score when Hasty doubled to left center followed by a
Briana Archibald (Wendell, N.C.) double. Archibald would score from second when Jefferson sent a dribbler up the first base line. Jefferson danced around the first tag attempt from the SAU first baseman, but was able to buy enough time for Archibald to race home to cut the Falcon cushion to 5-3.
Trailing 5-3 going into the seventh inning, the Golden Bulls rallied once more. After Lopez doubled, the switch-hitting Mahoney would send a 1-0 offering over the right field fence to tie the game at 5-5. After a fielding error by SAU's second baseman allowed Greene to reach first, Green swiped her fifth bag of the year to get into scoring position. Hasty would then take a 1-0 offering to left field for the walk-off single, sending the Golden Bulls to the come-from-behind 6-5 win.
JCSU improves to 8-10 overall and 7-3 in CIAA play. JCSU also stands at a perfect 4-0 in Southern Division play.
The Golden Bulls will return to the diamond again on Sunday, April 10, hosting Southern Division foe Shaw University. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
