JCSU Softball Splits In Day One of CIAA Softball Roundup
Charlotte, N.C. (March 17, 2017) – The Johnson C. Smith University softball team earned a split in the opening day of the CIAA Softball Roundup at Niven Park in Charlotte.
In game one, JCSU rallied to tie the game 5-5 in the seventh inning then scored runs in the ninth and tenth innings while holding off Virginia Union in earning the 7-6 win. JCSU senior
Morgan Hasty (Salem, Ind.) went 4-of-5 and hit two doubles, driving in two RBI on the afternoon. Teammate
Kaitlin Santos (Honolulu, Hi.) also had a productive outing, registering three hits and also driving in two runs.
The Golden Bulls heroics started in the seventh inning. Down 5-3 entering their last at-bat, JCSU scored both runs with two outs. Junior
Tia Mahoney (Hartwell, Ga.) roped a double then scored on a Hasty single. Santos would then lace a single up the middle that scored Hasty, tying the game at 5-5, but was thrown out at second trying to stretch the hit into a double.
In the ninth, both teams were able to score, with JCSU going ahead 6-5 when
Randaisa Daniels (Shallotte, N.C.) hit a single that scored
Breanna Archibald (Wendell, N.C.) from second after starting due to the international tie-breaker rule.
VUU would then also score in the ninth after getting a single after loading the bases.
In the tenth, the Golden Bulls would get the eventual game-winner when Santos delivered a double to right field that scored Mahoney, who was placed at second to start the inning.
The Golden Bulls then came up with a big defensive play in the tenth after VUU singled up the middle, but Archibald gunned down the VUU runner trying to advance to third for the second out. JCSU pitcher
Victoria Lopez (San Diego, Ca.) slammed the door on the Panthers by striking out the final batter to earn her third win of the year.
In game two, periennial CIAA power Chowan limited JCSU to just two hits while rapping out 10 of their own to take an 8-0 win in five innings.
Miranda Ricafrente (Jacksonvile, Fla.) and Daniels provided the two hits for the Golden Bulls in the loss.
JCSU will continue play with two more games in the CIAA Roundup on Saturday, March 18. The Golden Bulls will take on Northern Division foe Lincoln at 1:00 p.m. and then tangle with the Bowie State Bulldogs at 3:00 p.m.
