Box Score 2 JCSU Softball Sweeps ECSU in a Twilight Doubleheader
Charlotte, N.C. (March 25, 2017) – Led by a strong pitching outing in game one and an offensive explosion in game two, the Johnson C. Smith University softball team swept a twilight doubleheader from Elizabeth City State at Biddleville Park on Saturday.
In game one, a makeup game from last weekend's CIAA Roundup, senior
Jocelyn Hernandez (Bloomington, Ca.) went 2-for-2 with a double and a triple while driving in one RBI. JCSU got three runs in the third inning and never looked back in taking the 8-0 win in six innings. Senior
Miranda Ricafrente (Jacksonville, Fla.) had two RBI for JCSU in the win.
In the circle, senior right-hander
Victoria Lopez (San Diego, Ca.) was masterful, limiting the Vikings to just three hits while striking out nine in the win, improving her tally to 4-3 on the season.
In game two, a nonconference matchup, the JCSU bats exploded for five runs in the first inning, six in the second inning and four more in the third inning to bold to a 15-3 lead.
In the JCSU first, Hernandez led off with a double and after
Morgan Hasty (Salem, Ind.) singled, junior
Tia Greene (Huntersville, N.C.) laced a double that hugged the left field line that drove in both Hernandez and Hasty.
Tia Mahoney (Hartwell, Ga.) then doubled and after a Ricafrente walk, freshman
Tasia Bolling (Leland, N.C.) ripped a triple down the left field line that cleared the bases, making it 5-3 at the end of the first.
JCSU would add six more runs in the second with the big hit coming when Greene launched her second-career home run that cleared the left field fence, extending the JCSU lead to 8-3. The Golden Bulls would go on to add three more to push the lead to 11-3 after two complete.
After retiring the Vikings in the third, JCSU then got four more runs after a Hasty RBI single. After JCSU loaded the bases, ECSU pitching would then force home two more runs after hitting two consecutive JCSU batters and allowed a run to score on a groundout from Hernandez.
Down 15-3, ECSU would not seriously threaten again, as JCSU took the 15-3 win in five innings.
Offensively, Greene led the way, going 3-for 4 with five RBI including the three-run homer. Bolling also had four RBI while Hernandez and Hasty each finished 2-of-4 from the plate with an RBI.
Bolling got the pitching win for the Golden Bulls, scattering five hits and striking out two Viking batters to improve her season record to 4-6.
JCSU now stands at 9-10 overall and 4-2 in CIAA play while ECSU drops to 1-16 and 0-3 in league play.
