Winston-Salem, N.C. (April 8, 2017) – The Johnson C. Smith University softball team managed a split with Winston-Salem State, falling in game one 3-1 while taking game two by an 8-5 score on Saturday afternoon at the Twin City Fields in Winston-Salem.

WSSU wasted no time in game one, plating three runs in the bottom of the frame when the Rams got a leadoff homer and followed that with a two-run blast four batters later.

JCSU would answer in the second inning by scoring one. Sophomore Kaitlin Santos (Honolulu, Hi.) was hit by a pitch and would later come around to score after Tia Greene (Huntersville, N.C.) laced an RBI single through the right side.

Neither team was able to push any other runs across the rest of the game with WSSU taking the 3-1 win.

In game two, the JCSU bats came alive. After spotting WSSU a 1-0 lead, JCSU drew even in the second inning after Victoria Lopez (San Diego, Ca.) launched her second homer of the season . JCSU would add four runs in the fourth on another Lopez hit, this one being a single to right field which drove in Tia Mahoney (Hartwell, Ga.).  An RBI bunt single from Breanna Archibald (Wendell, N.C.) and a double from Hernandez plated two runs, staking JCSU to the 5-1 lead.

JCSU added two more in the fifth inning following RBI singles from senior Miranda Ricafrente (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Archibald but WSSU would get three runs in the bottom of the fifth to close to within 7-4.

The Golden Bulls would tack on another run in the sixth inning when Hasty scored after a dropped fly ball by the WSSU right fielder, making it 8-4. WSSU would attempt to mount a rally, but was limited to scoring just one run in the seventh, with the Golden Bulls earning the 8-5 win and the doubleheader split.

Senior Morgan Hasty did the damage in game two, going 3-for-4 with three doubles. Teammate Jocelyn Hernandez managed two RBI on a 1-of-5 effort while Lopez went 2-of-4 with two RBI. Miranda Ricafrente also had a solid outing, going 3-of-4 with an RBI while Breanna Archibald plated two runs after going 2-of-4 from the play.

In the circle, Lopez improved her season tally to 7-5, going the distance for the complete game while striking out eight Ram batters.

The split improves JCSU to 12-13 overall, 6-5 in CIAA play and 3-3 in the Southern Division while WSSU now stands at 8-26, 4-5 in CIAA play and 1-3 in the Southern Division.

JCSU will return home on Sunday, April 9, taking on division foe Fayetteville State in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
