Charlotte, N.C. (April 9, 2017) – The Johnson C. Smith University softball team downed visiting Fayetteville State 5-1 in game one of a CIAA Southern Division doubleheader at Biddleville Park on Sunday afternoon. FSU took game two 11-5 to manage a split.
In game one, the Golden Bulls struck quickly, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning when senior
Morgan Hasty (Salem, Ind.) singled to center field, scoring
Jocelyn Hernandez (Bloomington, Ca.) who started the game with a double to the right center gap. Freshman
Randasia Daniels (Shallotte, N.C.) scampered home on Hasty's hit after an error by the FSU centerfielder.
JCSU jumped to a 3-0 lead in the third inning after
Tia Mahoney (Hartwell, Ga.) laced a double to left field, driving in Hasty, who led the inning off with a single.
The JCSU lead would then swell to 5-0 in the fifth when
Tia Greene (Huntersville, N.C.) ripped a double to the left-center gap, driving in Hasty and Daniels. FSU would break up the shutout by scoring one in the sixth inning, but could get no closer, with JCSU earning the 5-1 win.
Greene finished 1-for-3 with two RBI while Hasty went 2-for-3. Daniels also had a good game at the plate, going 2-for-4, scoring twice.
Victoria Lopez (San Diego, Ca.) improves to 8-5 as the JCSU pitcher. Lopez scattered six hits, allowed one run and struck out two Bronco batters in the win.
In game two, FSU struck quickly, plating two runs in the first inning, the first coming on a Carley Greene solo home run to left field and the second coming when Shi-Cara Goins scored on a fielder's choice. The Bronco lead was short-lived, as JCSU crossed three in the bottom of the first to take the 3-2 lead. Mahoney doubled, scoring Hernandez followed by an RBI from Greene and from
Miranda Ricafrente (Jacksonville, Fla.)
FSU then added runs in every inning except the third to take the 11-5 win.
JCSU's Greene had the hot bat in game two, going 4-for-4 with two doubles while driving in two. Ricafrente also drove in two on a 2-for-4 outing. Mahoney also finished 2-for-4 while driving in one.
