JCSU Football Legend Pettis Norman Receives Plaque on the Mecklenburg County Sports Wall of Fame

Charlotte, N.C. (May 26, 2017) – Johnson C. Smith University legendary football player Pettis Norman received a plaque on the Mecklenburg County Sports Wall of Fame in a ceremony on Friday morning at the Revolution Park Sports Academy in Charlotte.

Norman, a 1962 graduate of JCSU, played with the Dallas Cowboys from 1962-1970, helping the Cowboys to five playoff appearances including two NFL title game appearances as well as an appearance in Super Bowl V. At tight end, Norman was a member of three divisional championships and was named an NFL Unsung Hero five times. He also played with the San Diego Chargers from 1971-1973, serving as co-captain in 1971 and was named Man of the Year in 1972.

In 2009, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram named him one of the Top 50 Greatest Cowboys of all-time.

He completed his NFL career with 183 receptions for 2,492 yards and 15 touchdowns.

At JCSU, he played for coach Eddie McGirt and earned All-America and All-CIAA honors from 1959-1961. He later was inducted into the JCSU Hall of Fame and in 1977, was inducted into the John B. McLendon CIAA Hall of Fame.
