Box Score 2 JCSU Softball Downs Bowie State, Falls to Fayetteville State at CIAA Tournament
Petersburg, Va. (May 4, 2017) – The Johnson C. Smith University softball team earned a 3-2 win over Bowie State in the opening round of the CIAA Tournament and fell to Fayetteville State in the winner's bracket semifinals on Thursday afternoon at the Petersburg Sports Complex.

Morgan Hasty (Salem, Ind.) got the Golden Bulls going early by launching her fourth homer of the season, a two-run shot to put JCSU up 2-0 in the top of the first. Â Â BSU would then cut the deficit to 2-1 in the first and tied the game in the second inning 2-2.
The Golden Bulls would then plate what would become the winning run in the third inning after getting three straight singles from Hasty,
Tia Greene (Huntersville, N.C.) and
Kaitlin Santos (Honolulu, Hi.). ' Santos' hit drove in Greene from third for the 3-2 lead.
JCSU then loaded the bases in the fifth inning but left them stranded. BSU would place a runner on second in the fifth, but a double play, JCSU's second of the day, ended the Bulldog threat. BSU would then get runners on second and third in the seventh inning, but a foul out to Greene ended the game with JCSU winning 3-2.
With the win, JCSU advanced to the semifinals to play Fayetteville State. After spotting the Broncos a 2-0 lead after two complete, JCSU rallied to tie the game at 2-2 in the third inning thanks to RBI singles from both Hasty and
Breanna Archibald (Wendell, N.C.).Â
FSU then erupted for four runs to push the lead to 6-2 in the third inning. JCSU would get a run in the fifth on an RBI single from Greene and another in the seventh from senior
Victoria Lopez (San Diego, Ca.) that made it 6-4. After Lopez' hit, FSU ended the game with a lineout to shortstop, sending the Golden Bulls to the loser's bracket.
JCSU will continue play in the CIAA Tournament on Friday with a 10:00 a.m. elimination game against Bowie State.
