Softball Goes 3-3 at CIAA Roundup

 The Johnson C. Smith University softball team traveled to
Elizabeth City, N.C. to take part in the CIAA Roundup, finishing the three-day event with a 3-3 record to begin league play.

On Friday, JCSU fell in both of it's games, first a hard-fought 8-6 game to Bowie State and a 12-4 decision to Chowan.  Against the Bulldogs, JCSU surrendered fell behind 5-0 in the first.  JCSU got a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to trail 8-3, but plated three in the seventh inning to provide the 8-6 final.

Against Chowan, JCSU again fell behind early, with the Hawks bolting to a 7-1 lead after three innings.  JCSU scored one in the fourth but Chowan scored five in the fifth to take the 12-2 lead.  The Golden Bulls did manage to score two runs in the seventh inning, but would get no closer, falling by a 12-4 score.

On Saturday, JCSU dropped an 11-9 three-inning affair to Virginia State.  JCSU started strong, scoring eight runs in the first and led 9-4, but VSU tied the game by scoring five of their own in the second inning.  VSU then added two un the bottom of the third to take the 11-9 lead. A JCSU injury then forced the game to be called with VSU earning the 11-9 win.

JCSU finally got on the winning track with a 6-5 win over Virginia Union on Saturday's second game.  Trailing 4-2, JCSU scored a pair in the seventh inning to force extras, and then played two in the eighth inning to take their first CIAA win of the year at 6-5.

On Sunday, the Golden Bulls had no trouble, earning a 22-1 win over Lincoln and a 9-1 win over host Elizabeth City State, with both games ending after five innings.

Against the Lions, JCSU went ahead 11-0 after the first and cruised the rest of the way. The Golden Bulls also started fast against the Vikings, going up 6-1 after the first and ended the game with three runs in the fifth inning to end the game.

JCSU now stands at 5-9 overall and 3-3 in CIAA play.

JCSU's Sanae Nakoa (Maui, Hawai'i) had a stellar weekend, hitting .429 by rapping out six hits, with three doubles, a triple and a home run. She had seven RBI and scored six times over the six-game stretch. Shenice Harrison (Leland, N.C.) also had great outings, hitting for a .588 average, recording 10 hits on 17 at-bats, scoring seven times while recording three doubles and a home run. All-told, Harrison had seven RBI on the weekend.
