Golden Bull Softball Goes 2-0 on Day One of CIAA Round-up

Defeat Va. Union and Lincoln (Pa)

Elizabeth City, N.C. –The Johnson C. Smith  University softball team went 2-0 on day one of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-up hosted by Elizabeth City State University.  The round-up, which runs through Sunday, Mar. 17, is being held at the South Park Athletic Complex located at 110 Capital Trace.

JCSU, who will be playing northern division conference opponents over the weekend, opened up the round-up with wins over Virginia Union and Lincoln (Pa). Saturday, the Golden Bulls face Chowan (12:15 p.m.) and Elizabeth City State (2:30 p.m.).  JCSU will close out the weekend on Sunday (Mar. 17) with games against Bowie State (10:00 a.m.) and Virginia State (2:30 p.m.).

Weather delays earlier in the season have limited JCSU's opportunity to play.  The Golden Bulls have had eight games either cancelled or postponed and hadn't played for a week entering the round-up.

In their opening game against Virginia Union, JCSU took advantage of six VUU errors on the way to their first win of the season, 8-0, over the Panthers.

Kaitlyn Santos led the way with two hits in three appearances. Tatyana Mars held VUU to just four hits in five innings to pick up her first win and first shutout of the season.

In the second game of the day, JCSU exploded for 20 runs on 16 hits to shut out the Lady Lions, 20-0, in five innings.

The Golden Bulls scored five runs in the first inning to cruise to victory.

Sanae Nakoa limited LU to just one hit and helped her own cause going two-for-two with four runs batted in.

Evelyn Arguelles had three hits, all doubles, in four at-bats and added three rbi to her ledger.

With the wins, JCSU improves to 2-6 overall and 2-0 in the CIAA.
