JCSU Softball sweeps Shaw

Golden Bulls score 28 runs in two games

RALEIGH, N.C. Johnson C. Smith University's softball team swept a pair of games against Shaw University on Thursday afternoon at Worthdale Park.  The Golden Bulls continued their push to a spot in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championship Tournament by solidifying their third place position in the Southern Division standings with convicing 14-5 and 14-4 victories over the Lady Bears.

The top four finishers in each division qualify for the championship tournament.

Senior Evelyn Arguelles had a monster day, going three-for-four with four rbi and three runs scored in the first game followed by a four-for-four, five rbi, three runs scored performance in game two

Junior Alexis D'Louhy contributed to the onslaught going four-for-four with two rbi and three runs scored in the second game.

JCSU was efficient in the first game scoring 14 runs on just seven hits, taking advantage of five Shaw errors.

The Golden Bulls had a 3-0 lead in the second inning but Shaw stormed back with four runs in the bottom of the second to take a brief 4-3 lead.  After a scoreless third inning, JCSU exploded for seven runs in the fourth and sixth innings to close out the run-shortened game.

Game two found JCSU's bats still hot, scoring nine runs in the first two innings on the way to 14 runs on 19 hits in five innings of play.

Arguelles and D'Louhy combined for eight hits while scoring six runs.  Freshman Teana Lewis went three-for-four with one rbi.

JCSU returns to action Sunday (Apr 7) when they host Fayetteville State in a critical Southern Division matchup.

First pitch at Biddleville Park is slated for 2:00 p.m.
