The Johnson C. Smith men's and women's track teams produced strong performances on the first day of the CIAA Outdoor Championships.
Day 1 was highlighted by
Sah-Jay Stevens who won the women's javelin and placed second in the shot put contributing 18 of the teams 25 points, good enough for second place.
Shanice Nieta finished fifth in the javelin and
Rayna Graham captured sixth in the long jump to complete first day scoring.
Virginia State is first in the women's division with 40 points. and Winston-Salem State University and Fayetteville State University are tied for third with 22 points.
For the men,
Tavian Stewart (2nd place) and Sadiki McFarlane earned podium spots in the long jump.
Kristoff Darby finished seventh in the 1500m.
Virginia Union University is the first-day men's leader with 42 points. Virginia State University is second with 41 points and Bowie State University, the meet host, is third with 29 points.
Action continues Sunday with finals in many events.
