Johnson C. Smith University mourns the passing of Pettis Norman '62 — the first Golden Bull to play in the NFL.
A proud JCSU graduate and standout student-athlete, Norman made history with the Dallas Cowboys (1962–1970), helping lead the team to five playoff appearances and #SuperBowlV. He continued his professional career with the San Diego Chargers and was inducted into the #CIAA Hall of Fame in 1977.
Beyond the field, Pettis was a trailblazer in business and a passionate advocate for civil rights and HBCUs. He remained deeply committed to JCSU throughout his life, embodying the strength, excellence, and legacy of a true Golden Bull.
